Asian Ambrosia Beetles attack stressed trees in the Spring. Stress can be caused by late pruning. Arborists should prune early to avoid attracting beetles to vulnerable trees such as pecans, fruit trees, muscadine grapes, Japanese maples, crape myrtles, etc. Stress in trees can be caused by water-logged soils. This years floods certainly have caused this situation. Trees can be stressed due to lack of nutrients (not enough fertilizer or improper pH), improper planting (planted too deep),mechanical injury (string trimmer damage) or any other situation that is detrimental to the trees’ overall health and vigor.
Keep trees healthy and stress free to avoid beetle infestation.
